The Charge HR was a breakthrough product for Fitbit as their first product with heart-rate tracking functionality. Fitbit continued to innovate and improve the Charge HR, releasing their much improved Charge HR 2. One of the most notable improvements was the interchangeable strap design which improved the look and reliability of the band and allowed owners to customize the appearance of their device.
As part of this effort, Fitbit looked to Spanner to evolve and refine a beautifully simple, robust and reliable self-locking clasp. Spanner worked closely with Fitbit’s engineering team to review and test assumptions, materials, spring parameters, insertion and release angles, assembly processes, metal injection molding (MIM) manufacturing considerations and eventually, work on-site with manufacturing partners to finalize a design that worked as simply and reliably as the Fitbit device itself.
